Sentinel-2 — the eye

European Space Agency optical imagery at 10 metres per pixel, revisiting most places every few days. This is what sees colour, vegetation and bare ground.

Sentinel-1 — the radar that ignores weather

Radar passes straight through cloud and works at night. In the Kerala flood scan below, optical imagery was useless for weeks under monsoon cloud — radar carried the entire result.

The place's own seasonal history — the sanity check

Fields turn brown every year. Rivers rise every monsoon. SCOPE compares each place against itself in the same season, so ordinary seasonal change is never reported as an alert. That is why 27 undisturbed control sites produced zero false alarms.

Honest limits

What SCOPE will not do.

You should know this before you pay, not after.

  • It cannot see much below 10–20 metres across. A single tree, a boundary wall or a parked vehicle is under what the imagery resolves.
  • It cannot tell you who did something, or whether it was legal. It reports how the ground looks now versus before.
  • Under heavy cloud the optical sensor sees nothing. Radar usually carries the scan — and when it can't, SCOPE says so plainly instead of guessing.
  • Causes are offered as likely or possible, never as fact, with the evidence shown so you can judge it yourself.
